In 2022–23, I began learning Type Design with the intention of working at a type foundry. Over time, this exploration expanded into a deeper integration of type thinking within my everyday design practice.
This section of the portfolio reflects my study of calligraphic structures through analogue practice. Repeating each letter multiple times helped me train my eye and refine my visual sensitivity, strengthening the foundations of my design work.
This Type portfolio primarily showcases my analogue Gujarati type calligraphy practice.
Practicing Individual Letters
- I began the calligraphy exercise by dividing the letters into form-wise groups. It helped me identify similar character structures and forms.
- I observed the stress, proportions, counter spaces, and overall construction of the individual letters.
- Marked letters are the ones that I think have the best Calligraphic proportions.

Letter Forms with Aa Matra
- Writing strings of letters allowed me to comprehend space distribution by gauging counter spaces and the spaces around the letter in relation to the Kana matra (Vertical stroke).
- Grouping these strings also helped me understand the overall texture, alignment zones guided me in deciding the positions of the strokes.

Sentences and Paragraphs
- Writing sentences helped in seeing details from a micro to a macro level.
- Writing 7 to 8 sentences together helped me view them as a unit, allowing me to observe letter construction in a Type System.
- I started by observing the spacing between the words and later noted my observations on the strokes, proportions, modulation, and visual weights.
